Making decisions is something we do every day, and while most of us take it for granted the process is not as straightforward as one would think.

Today is the fourth conversation in a 5-part series with Paul Gordon, an expert in decision thinking and the author of ‘Hard Decisions Made Easy”, talking about the third principle of structured decision making: Active Stakeholder Participation

Decisions stick because the people who need to carry them out and are impacted have a sense of ownership. The best way to get ownership is to actively involve stakeholders in the process, not just ‘consult’ or brief them, by having them contribute to the design, find, develop and evaluate options.

Key takeaway: For a big decision you are facing, write down the stakeholders – and think broadly, not just the obvious ones. Look at your decision process and see how those stakeholders could play an active part. A great idea is to pick one or two and ask them how they see they could participate.
